Fresh Herbs

Fresh Herbs

I've been sailing for many summers but only during weekends and 1-2 week vacations.  It's only our second summer that we've had a chance to sail for the whole season.

For many years, growing fresh herbs on the boat didn't make sense of course.  But, two years ago we met this couple in Killarney.  They were sailing a beautiful 45-foot Gozzard.  Hung in their cockpit was a shoe sorter (you know, these plastic pockets sewn together in which you can put shoes).  In each pocket, they had potting soil and a herb plant growing in it.  What a great idea!

We became friends quickly.  When they left, they gave us a few sprigs of herbs that we kept for a week in water.  This is when I realize how much I've missed cooking with fresh herbs.  They make your taste buds dance!

This spring, a few weeks before we left home, Frank planted mint (Happy Hour mojitos), thyme, sage, chives and parsley.  With the lockdown, I wasn't able to buy a shoe sorter; but we're using a large pot that we keep at the bow in anchorage or in the cockpit en route.  I love picking a sprig or two for my dish.  My taste buds are happy!
